Valentyn Vasyanovych

A director, producer and DOP, Valentyn Vasyanovych was born in 1971 in Zhytomyr, Ukraine. He graduated from the Karpenko-Kary National University of Theatre, Film and TV as a cinematographer in 1995 and a documentary filmmaker in 2000. In 2007, he finished his studies at the Wajda School in Poland. In 2004 his documentary Against the Sun received the Jury Prize of the International Film Festival in Clermont-Ferrand, the jury mention at the International Film Festival in Toronto, and many other awards. In 2012, he made his debut feature film Business As Usual (Odesa International Film Festival, Special Jury Mention, FICC award). His second feature film, Kredens, came out the next year and was also awarded a prize by the Odesa IFFFIPRESCI Jury. In 2014, Valentyn Vasyanovych produced and photographed The Tribe, a film which became the most successful Ukrainian film in recent history. In 2015, Valentyn’s feature length documentary Crepuscule was awarded a special mention at DOCUDAYS UA and the best Ukrainian film award at the Odesa IFF. In 2017, his fiction feature Black Level was selected as the Ukrainian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards.
