Comic book "Together for Safe Childbirth!": take care of your rights

13 September 2023

The all-Ukrainian campaign "Together for Safe Childbirth!" by the Docudays UA NGO ends with a booklet that provides important information for expectant mothers and fathers in a convenient way.

The project team presents a comic book about human rights during pregnancy and childbirth. The visual narrative and entertaining format will help you to quickly learn useful tips and apply new knowledge in your life. Everything is based on the most common situations that occur during this period: from choosing a maternity hospital to meeting a child for the first time.

The protagonist of the comic is a baby in the womb who listens to voices from the outside world. The baby gradually learns how mom and dad protect their rights during pregnancy and childbirth, and comments on what it hears.

"We decided to tell people how to defend their rights during pregnancy and childbirth in a creative format. Our goal was to draw attention to possible cases of violations in a light, unobtrusive way and remind people where they can get more information and help," says Ksenia Shymanska, co-author of the comic, campaign coordinator and human rights activist.

"It is a good idea to present information in images. This way, the complex content is perceived easily and positively. The way of telling the story also works well: the comic shows in detail the needs of a woman in labour through the feelings and experiences of the child being born," comments Lyudmyla Ivashchuk, an obstetrician and gynaecologist at the Rivne City Council Maternity Hospital.
