OKO International Ethnographic Film Festival

Festival
Description

OKO is the only international ethnographic film festival in Ukraine, founded in 2020. Its mission is to promote ethnographic, anthropological, and "post-ethnographic" cinema, exploring traditions, culture, historical memory, and contemporary challenges of different nations. The festival takes place annually and has a unique geographical format: it is held both in Ukraine (Kyiv, Bolhrad, Odesa region) and Bulgaria (Sofia). This makes OKO a cultural bridge between Ukraine and Bulgaria, fostering international dialogue and integrating Ukrainian cinema into the global context.

The festival’s program includes:

  • Competitive and non-competitive screenings of documentary, fiction, and experimental films that explore identity, heritage, and cultural transformations.
  • Discussion platforms and masterclasses featuring filmmakers, anthropologists, historians, and cultural experts.
  • Educational initiatives aimed at supporting young directors, including workshops on documentary filmmaking, ethnographic research through cinema, and intercultural exchange.
