The Mykytenko family’s fight for Ukraine began in 2014. Yuliia and her father, Mykola, battled for independence until 2016. In 2020, Mykola staged the ultimate protest—self-immolation. Now, as war rages again, Yuliia must honor his legacy, tell their story, and defend her country once more.
Yulia, a 25-year-old Ukrainian combatant, struggles with the loss of her husband and father during the war in Donbas. Her family has fought for Ukraine’s independence for generations. She joined the Revolution of Dignity (2013-2014), then the army, serving alongside her husband and father. After her husband’s death in 2016, she left the frontline to work at a military college. In 2020, her father Mykola self-immolated to warn of Russian aggression. Grieving, she writes poetic letters to him and continues his mission. Burnt out, she resigns but returns to fight on February 24, 2022, accepting her father’s sacrifice.
