Brazil, 2018. Driven by the impact of coming across a 16mm film whose uncanny images seemed familiar but came from far away, and were made long ago, I decided to investigate the origins of this footage. At first, it seemed just an innocent home movie, but after careful research, the film has proven to be a revealing document from South Africa’s apartheid past. Among sinister discoveries and unavoidable gaps, I now reveal the results of my endeavour, based on contemporary online search tools.

Janaína Nagata
Janaína Nagata is an artist and researcher. In 2016, she began to explore processes of manual intervention on film. Her work has been exhibited in several collective exhibitions in Brazil, Argentina, Spain and China. She has held artistic residencies in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, in Beijing, China and at Centro Cultural São Paulo. She won the 22nd Visualidade Nascente Award from the Pró Reitoria de Cultura e Extensão of USP. A graduate in Plastic Arts, she is a Master and PhD candidate in Visual Arts at ECA/USP.
