Ivan and Marta: Screening of the Closing Film of the 20th Docudays UA during the Audience Days

10 June 2023

Don't miss the screening of Serhiy Bukovsky's new film Ivan and Marta, which will take place on June 11 at 3.10 PM at Zhovten Cinema as part of the festival's Audience Days.

The outspoken cinematic narrative about the life and work of the prominent Ukrainian dissident writer of the 1960s and literary critic Ivan Dziuba and his wife Marta was being filmed over a period of four years. The Ukrainian premiere of the film took place at the anniversary Docudays UA.

"We didn't attend the premiere, but thanks to the participants of our DOC Workshop, we were able to join the event live. They kept us photos and videos. On Viktoriia's phone, we watched the live footage from the screening, and on mine, we used an app with a map of air raid alerts in Ukraine. We are grateful to the festival team and the audience, including our friends, for standing firm during this hour of anxiety and returning to the cinema. This is another proof that we, Ukrainians, are unbreakable. Culture, and most of all cinema, helps us bring the victory closer! Glory to Ukraine!," says Serhiy Bukovsky, the film's director.

"We were looking forward to the premiere with excitement (as always) and caution. We realized that Mrs. Marta and Ivan Mykhailovych's family would be watching the film for the first time. So it was important for us to see their reaction and hear their warm feedback. Several years have passed since the first shooting day, so the material has already dictated its own version of events. This actually happens a lot in documentary filmmaking, especially when you are dealing with real people, your contemporaries, rather than archival materials. In fact, the first filming session with Ivan Mykhailovych took place during our project Ferry (produced by Gennadiy Kofman), which was realized back in 2018 with the support of the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation," emphasizes Viktoria Bondar, co-author of the idea of the film.

Tickets for the screening of Ivan and Marta are available here or at the cinema box office. The full schedule of the festival’s final screening day is available on the website.
