Award for a participant of RAW DOC from Rough Cut Service!

24 April 2025

Applications are now open for the RAW DOC showcase for filmmakers seeking professional feedback on their documentary films at the rough cut stage. We are pleased to announce that this year, one of the projects will receive an award from Rough Cut Service in partnership with Docudays UA. The award includes two free consultations for the selected project with acclaimed editor Niels Pagh Andersen, who has years of experience, and another member of the Rough Cut Service team. Niels Pagh Andersen is part of this year’s RAW DOC panel of experts, will be present at the rough cut screenings, and will select the winner. Don’t miss your chance to participate in the selection: applications for RAW DOC are open until 5 May.

Rough Cut Service was created Iikka Vehkalahti and Menno Boerema to help outstanding documentary films reach their full potential. At the same time, it provides support to talented filmmakers who often work alone and in countries where support for documentary filmmaking is limited. Among films that received consultations by Rough Cut Service are winners of Sundance, Berlinale, IDFA and many other prestigious festivals. The Rough Cut Service team consists of thirteen highly professional editors from around the world. Films selected for support are based on applications submitted on their website.

Niels Pagh Andersenstarted his career as an assistant in fiction film when he was 16 years old. Since 1979 he has worked as a film editor and has edited more than 250 widely different films. Among them the fiction films The Pathfinder (Academy Award Nominee) and Everlasting Moments (Golden Globe Nominee), and the documentaries The Act of Killing and The Look of Silence (both Academy Award Nominees).

Besides his work as an editor, Andersen lectures and teaches at workshops, film festivals, film schools and universities around the world and also works as a supervising editor. In 2005, Andersen won the prestigious Danish Lifetime Achievement award, the Roos Prize, for his outstanding achievements in documentary filmmaking. In 2012, he became Professor in Editing at the Norwegian Film School. In 2021, he published the book Order in Chaos — Storytelling and Editing in Documentary Films.

Also among the selected projects, the KINO42 team will choose one that will be given the opportunity to screen a rough cut of the film with the team in a cinema.

Entry to the screening day will be closed and only accessible to the participants of the selected projects and for the international experts. See the full list of experts who will take part in RAW DOC here
