The Film Revision of Donbas. Presentation of a book by the Oleksandr Dovzhenko National Centre

Duration
75’

The Oleksandr Dovzhenko National Center presents its new publication, Cinematographic Revision of Donbas, published with the support of the State Foundation for Fundamental Research.

Cinematographic Revision of Donbas publication is probably the first attempt to research the place of the Donbas region, which lies next to the border, in the history of Ukrainian cinema. The book’s chapters research the array of Ukrainian Soviet films whose story was set in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, and analyze the mechanisms of representation of the Donbas within Soviet ideological framework and myths. The intention of the book is not so much to hear Donbas as to see it; to look at it through the lens of a film camera and the lens of humanitarian knowledge; to follow a certain historical dramaturgy of the construction and the following deconstruction of the heroic narrative of the Donbas.

At the Docudays UA presentation, you will have a chance to learn about:

– the leading and supporting roles of Donbas in Soviet cinema;

– key Ukrainian films about Donbas;

– the Kulturfilm project, where you can ould watch some of these films and analyze them together with film researchers;

– new research work dedicated to the representation of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions in cinema, planned for 2016;

– how to obtain your own copy of the book.

The participants of the presentation:

Liusia Zoria, the coordinator of the Dovzhenko Center’s projects;

Stanislav Menzelevskyy, head of the department of science and program development of the Dovzhenko Center, and compiler of The Film Revision of Donbas collection;
