More and more people in Ukraine are learning to live with the consequences of injuries. And our task is to make accessibility the new norm of life not only in infrastructure, but also in worldview — one in which difference does not determine a person’s dignity, opportunities or limits of participation in society, particularly for veterans.
How do we perceive veterans with disabilities today, and where do points of tension arise in this interaction? What kind of language and perspective on their experience are needed to avoid simplifications and stigmatisation? To what extent are our communities and the state human-centred? What needs to change in public consciousness, approaches and policies so that defenders do not have to fight for their place in society?
At the RIGHTS NOW! Lecture Hall, Oleksandr Budko, known by the call sign “Teren” — a veteran of the Russian-Ukrainian war, public figure, author and host of the inclusive travel show My Legs Are Done, or All Inclusive — will speak about the integration of veterans, society’s attitude towards them and Ukraine’s steps towards accessibility.
