DOCU/PRO TALK: Challenges of the Ukrainian industry and documentary animation

24 May 2023

We are completing the announcements of this year's Industry Programme. Don't miss one more discussion about the challenges of the industry with a wide range of participants, as well as a partner event about the prospects of documentary animation.

Our team has invited representatives of the documentary filmmaking sphere and state institutions to continue the behind-the-scenes conversation in a wider circle. What are the results of this year for us? How do we want the year to be? On June 3, at 11:00, join the live event Ukrainian Documentary Filmmakers: Reality check. Round table with the Non-Fiction Cinema Guild. We will talk about the achievements and problems of the industry with Eugene Rachkovsky, Mariia Ponomarova, Zhanna Maksymenko-Dovhych, Yelizaveta Smith, Olha Beskhmelnytsina, Andrii Kotliar, and Natalia Movshovych. The meeting will be moderated by Illia Gladshtein.

The discussion about the genre of documentary animation will help expand your professional toolkit. Although the first animated documentary (The Sinking of the Lusitania) was released in 1918, this genre was long considered a paradox. It took several powerful breakthroughs, such as Waltz with Bashir and Flee, for it to win recognition by a wider audience and influential industry players. Today, the use of animation in documentary filmmaking has truly flourished. More and more filmmakers are finding creative freedom and exciting new challenges in this genre.

On June 6, at 14:00, listen to the online discussion Animated Documentaries: Challenges and Opportunities. We have invited Piotr Kardas, a film curator specializing in animated documentaries, and Alex Widdowson, a London-based director working in the same genre and researching neurodiversity representation and psychology, to discuss the use and creative combination of documentary and animation in cinema. They will also talk about finding a balance between the seemingly limitless potential of animation, on the one hand, and the documentary filmmaker's duty to create authentic and ethical representations of people and the world, on the other hand.

Tomorrow, May 25, is the last day to buy an industry accreditation. All DOCU/PRO events are listed here.
