On 10th of June, as part of the DOCU/PRO platform, industry accreditation holders will have the opportunity to attend both a panel discussion and a masterclass dedicated to the use of artificial intelligence in documentary filmmaking. Leading experts from the global and Ukrainian industry will discuss tools, ethical questions, and share insights from their practice.
For documentary filmmaking — a genre grounded in trust in reality, authorial perspective and ethical responsibility — artificial intelligence opens up not only new possibilities, but new questions: where does the boundary of authorship lie, how does the nature of documentary testimony change, and who bears responsibility for decisions made with the involvement of a machine.
Ukraine is one of the few countries where legislation provides legal protection for content created with the assistance of AI. At the same time, what is recognized and protected in Ukraine may not carry the same authorship or ownership status in the United States or the European Union.
The Suspilne PRO discussion, featuring Dmytro Sholomko, an adviser to UA:PBC on digital transformation and former head of Google Ukraine, Dmytro Doroshenko who is a co-author of the official AI use guidelines issued by the Ministry of Digital Transformation of Ukraine, Zvika Gregory Portnoy, a Ukrainian-Polish-Israeli cinematographer, director and screenwriter and Eli Savala, a Mexican actress, producer, curator and media entrepreneur — will serve as a space to discuss practical experience with AI tools, the ethical limits of their use, the transformation of authorship, and the legal challenges already facing the contemporary media world. The event will be moderated by Olena Andriienko — Chief LegalTech Officer at Publicis Groupe Ukraine and member of the Expert Advisory Committee on AI Development at the Ministry of Digital Transformation of Ukraine.
How can AI be useful for working with archives, research, restoration, transcription and searching through large volumes of material? How does AI function at the stages of pre-production and production, as well as in translation, subtitling, voice-over and dubbing? Anna Giralt Gris and Jorge Caballero — co-founders of the Barcelona-based studio Artefacto — will share practical insights, working tools and editorial decisions at the heart of their recent projects, which have screened at TIFF, NYFF, the Rotterdam International Film Festival, IDFA, Hot Docs, SXSW, Visions du Réel and CPH:DOX. Drawing on specific case studies, the invited experts will address the questions outlined above, and during the Q&A session will offer feedback on your personal AI-related challenges.
We have extended the application deadline for DOCU/PRO industry accreditation to 28 May — we invite you to apply!
