For Ukraine, which is living through a prolonged war, the reintegration of veterans is an everyday reality and one of its greatest challenges. This involves a whole range of issues that we must address right now, at different levels: from high-quality physical and psychological rehabilitation to professional reintegration and self-realisation, an accessible and inclusive environment and, most importantly, changes within society itself.
What do male and female veterans face after leaving military service? Why is there a gap between what the system is supposed to provide and people’s real-life experiences, and which dimensions of return still remain overlooked? What role do family, communities, civil society, and business play in this process? And what does “society’s readiness” for the return of our defenders mean in practice?

Yuliia Kirillova, Deputy Minister for Veterans’ Affairs;
